This panorama of the entire 4 mile (6 km) long Emmons Glacier was taken from the same spot as the previous photo, but looking in the opposite direction. The Emmons has the largest area (4.3 square miles / 11 square km) of any glacier in the contiguous United States. At far left is the debris-covered terminus below the flank of Goat Island Mountain. The 11138 ft (3395 m) satellite peak of Little Tahoma dominates the center of the photo. The Emmons Glacier flows from the summit dome of Rainier visible at upper right. The rocky edge beside the Inter Glacier on which I am standing is visible at right. From here, we descended the rocky trail 200 feet on foot to reach the Emmons below, then skied up the clearly visible path around open crevasses to Camp Schurman, located just out of sight at the right edge of the photo.

(NOTE: This image is 1000 pixels wide! Panorama with 170-degree field of view from east-northeast through southwest, digitally composited from eight photographs.)
