Tungnafellsjokull is located just northwest of the huge Vatnajokull icefield in central Iceland.
Like many of the Icelandic volcanoes, its summit icecap conceals a large caldera. A second
ice-free caldera is found at much lower elevation to the southeast. The standard skiing and
climbing routes ascend the gentler east slopes of the complex from the area between
Tungnafellsjokull and Vatnajokull.
