Obviously, Mont Blanc is not a volcano, but the highest mountain in the Alps does tower far above its neighboring peaks in typical manner of high stratovolcanoes. Mont Blanc is certainly one of the finest mountains in the world for alpine climbing and for ski mountaineering. It is included in this guidebook since it was the birthplace of modern mountaineering in the late 18th century, and the region was also instrumental in the development of ski mountaineering during the 20th century. Thus Mont Blanc deserves an honorary place in any ski mountaineering guidebook of worldwide scope.
