We reached the northwest entrance to Lassen Volcanic National Park around 8:30 PM, and followed the park road to Emigrant Pass (6446 ft / 1965 m), where we hoped to car camp. The northeast face of Lassen was directly in front of us, catching the last rays as the sun set below the cloud layer. We scouted our route for the next morning and prepared to sleep, planning an early start. Unfortunately, a ranger drove up and told us we couldn't car camp there. But when we told him that we'd be climbing at first light, he relented and agreed to let us stay. He was even kind enough to drive back to the ranger station to get us a backcountry permit, which regulations required us to carry.
