Saint Helens is considered an ideal trip for snowboarders, but the last couple of miles of trail to the parking lot are quite flat and even rolling somewhat, forcing most snowboarders to take one foot out of the binding for propulsion and balance. I encouraged Matt to use the trekking poles while snowboarding to avoid these problems. After some initial reluctance, he soon got the hang of it and found that it was indeed a big help. This slightly blurry photo shows him cruising down the trail with poles in hand.
