Each student skied off the edge of the crevasse with a full day pack and ski poles, to simulate a real accident while skiing roped up on a glacier. After being lowered 40-50 feet into the crevasse, the first priority is to shed the pack and ski poles, by clipping them using carabiners onto a bight of the 'accident rope' hanging below. Then the skis are carefully removed and clipped to the rope in the same manner. Great caution is needed, as any dropped item could disppear for good into the shadowy depths below. I completed these steps without mishap, and my pack and skis are visible here, hanging on the rope several feet below me.
