The first day of our field trip was spent practicing crevasse rescue systems and self-arrest techniques on the slopes above Paradise on Mount Rainier. The next day we awoke at dawn, preparing to head out to the Nisqually Glacier to try these concepts out on a real glacier. Here I am standing on the 25 foot deep snowpack beside the plowed Paradise parking lot. The ranger station is visible across the lot, while the first rays of the sun strike the summit of Mount Rainier 9000 feet above us.
