We left the White Chuck River trailhead (2300 ft) on a sunny and warm Saturday morning, following the rolling trail for 5 miles to Kennedy Hot Springs. We ate a quick lunch and took the foot bridge across the river for a glance at the cloudy water of the hotsprings, then headed up a steep series of switchbacks to join the Pacific Crest Trail. After a short distance, a very steep climbers trail heads east up a ridge, with exposed tree roots providing much-needed hand and foot-holds along the badly eroded path. When the trail finally leveled out near 5200 ft, we had a fine view up past Boulder Basin to the lower reaches of the Sitkum Glacier, which would be our route to the summit the next day.
