Micah carves the last good turns of the day as the sun sets in the background. Below 7500 ft (2300 m), the snow condtions rapidly deteriorated into breakable crust, making any turn on skis treacherous. The snowboard fared only slightly better. Soon we were benighted, and skied (if you can call it that) the rest of the way by headlamp, extremely slowly. A couple of other parties shared our miserable fate, finally reaching the parking lot after 6 pm. We were greeted by a patient park ranger, waiting to close down the Paradise road for the night, who had seen our headlamps coming down and thus waited long after the normally scheduled closing hour.
