By the time we were ready to ski down at noon, several hikers who had summited from the south side were watching us. The 50-degree pitch of the upper part of the snowfield extended within 5 feet of the base of the summit tower, so we decided to ski directly from that point. Although quite steep, the softness of the snow made for enjoyable and forgiving skiing, with little risk of a dangerous fall. However, the uppermost 2-3 inches of the snowpack sluffed off with almost every turn, sliding at low speed for thousands of feet down the steep face.
