Looking up from the same spot as the previous photo, we see the famed Hogsback. Winter winds deposit the snow into a long, narrow ridge running from Crater Rock up towards the Pearly Gates and the summit. Just above the highest skier in this photo, the Hogsback is split horizontally by a bergschrund (a large crevasse which forms near the top of a glacier). The bergschrund has been increasing in width and overhang over the past few years, and now presents a formidable obstacle. Upon reaching it, we decided to put our skis on our packs and hike up with ice axes in hand for safety.
